L.A.'s own hardcore, powerviolence prospects in ZULU have asserted their artistic range with a special collaboration with Frequency x Spotify Singles in honor of Black Music Month.
Delivering a pair of singles, ZULU has shared a reworked version of the jazzy instrumental track, "Shine Eternally" from their universally-praised Flatspot Records full length, A New Tomorrow. The track is updated with a special guest assist from emerging songwriter sensation King Isis.
Contrasting the chi snap of 'Shine Eternally" ZULU has also shared their version of a modern metal classic with a volatile version of the Slipknot anthem, "Wait and Bleed". Underscoring the dynamic range of the band, ZULU submit their rendition of the classic with a version that pays homage to the original - taking few liberties with such a gamechanging track.
The decision to take on such a definitive track was something that ZULU architect Anaiah Lei said was pretty unanimous from the very beginning. " Honestly some of us kind of naturally thought of either Slipknot or System Of A Down for some reason and we ended up going with Slipknot. It’s funny how we all naturally shared that same thought."

The release is part of a current initiative with Frequency and Spotify Singles to properly highlight important contributors across the broad stylistic spectrum of rock in honor of Black Music Month. The series of releases also features singles from pop-punk sensation Meet Me @ The Altar tipping their hat to Kelly Clarkson's "Miss Independent" and indie champion Jean Dawson's take on the 50 Cent essential, "Window Shopper".
Addressing the versatility packaged in ZULU's sound, Lei shared how his craft function as an extension of how he identifies both as a person and an artist. "It’s a musical representation of my identity, it is who I am and no matter what I make it’s represented. Different styles of music are just different aspects of my identity."
Speaking to the greater social significance of the music and how Black Culture and rock culture are one in the same, Lei shared a message for the next generation discovering their musical identity, "Don’t let anyone tell you this music isn’t for you, or that you’re playing white people music. Our ancestors made it possible for this music to exist and we can’t let people take that away from us."
ZULU are set to begin a European run of tour dates along joining the likes of Aussie hardcore sensation SPEED and Wilkes-Barres's own, One Step Closer. The band are confirmed to perform at Hellfest in France this weekend, Outbreak Fest last this month and 2000 Trees next before rotating back to the States for a set at Furnace Fest in September.
